Cross Functional Collaboration
Why do we care about cross functional collaboration?
Cross functional collaboration is a critical component of any successful Enablement program.
Are you looking for cross functional collaboration best practices?
Want to understand better the role of Enablement in uncovering and facilitating collaboration across the business?
Cross Functional Collaboration Successes
To help you understand the importance of collaboration across the business, let me take a moment to share the typical successes that result from the cross-functional collaboration.
Duplication of efforts is often discovered.
Tools that would benefit other parts of the organization are often in use in aspects of the business.
Processes and information that could help other parts of the company are discovered, and individuals and teams can form connections as a result.
New ideas, a result of different viewpoints, are developed and ultimately lead to unplanned improvements. Check out the book on the Medici Effect to learn more.
Cross-Functional Collaboration Best Practices
For organizations, the idea of working in a cross-functional manner may be hard to comprehend. Management may have each team purposefully siloed, with only minor interactions occurring as a part of project work. In other cases, remote work can make collaboration feel more difficult.
How do you overcome roadblocks to collaboration to drive improvement in the business?
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and breaking down silos will not happen overnight.
However, a common tactic that works well is starting with your immediate circle. Do you have friends elsewhere in the business? Buy them a cup of coffee and explore what each of your teams focuses on, the approaches used, and the people they work with.
Did you learn anything? Can this person introduce you to someone they work with to have a similar coffee chat?
Become curious with those you work with
Very few of us are working in complete isolation from other teams. If you work with people from different groups, even briefly, invite them for a coffee collaboration and follow the same flow from above.
Formalize as it makes sense
As you discover information, insights, processes, common challenges, and other opportunities to collaborate, move from informal coffee chats into more formal conversations.
Cross-functional collaboration can lead to amazing business improvement and is a must-have for any high-performing Enablement organization.
